The Uses and Benefits of Barrier Pipes

The Uses and Benefits of Barrier Pipes

What Is a Barrier Pipe?

Barrier pipes are a specific type of plastic piping that is fitted with a protective layer. This layer has the function of stopping gases such as oxygen from passing through the pipe. Preventing gases from seeping through stops corrosion and contamination of water supplies.

These pipes can be found in a variety of systems including water distribution, internal heating and underfloor heating.

A range of materials can be used in the manufacture of barrier pipes. It is common to use aluminium or copper between the plastic layers to act as the barrier. For the actual pipes, polyethylene and polypropylene are two materials that are often used for the pipes.

What are the Benefits of Barrier Pipes?

It can extend the life of pipes and plumbing systems by keeping gases out. When oxygen is prevented from entering plumbing systems, it means the components are press at risk of rusting. This in turn means repair work is reduced over time along with maintenance costs.

These pipes are also suitable for brownfield sites. Here they can prevent hazardous and toxic materials from entering the pipe and contaminating a water supply. If not used, chemicals can enter the water and affect the taste.

Barrier Pipes Cost

Because of their added benefits, barrier pipes have a higher price than normal pipes. For this reason barrier pipes are usually employed in specific circumstances where there is a risk of contamination or pollution.

Rouden Pipetek Barrier Pipes

At Rouden Pipetek we stock polyethylene barrier pipes in a range of sizes. The benefits of our barrier pipes include:

  • Proven barrier against all recognised brownfield contaminants
  • Suitable for corrosive conditions – avoid the cost of expensive soil sampling
  • Long-term security of supply
  • All the installation benefits of polyethylene – a lightweight (80% lighter than cement lined ductile iron), flexible material that is fast and easy to install (up to 55% faster than ductile iron). No thrust blocks and wrapping required. Long pipe lengths reduce need for joints.
  • Reduced leakage
  • Excellent lifetime cost savings
  • Leading Barrier System
  • Leading the market for over 15 years
  • The most complete range of fully integrated pipe and fittings
  • Second–to-none approval status – full system is independently approved (see below)
